Spinal Injury Claim following a Road Traffic Accident

Steven pursued a claim for a spinal cord injury settlement after he was injured in a road traffic accident, in the UK, in 2007. He was awarded compensation totalling £7.75 million for his injuries.

When Steven was 17, he sustained a spinal injury in a road traffic accident. The fractures resulted in C6 ASIA B Tetraplegia.  Steven was in his second year at college at the time and still living at home. He wanted to remain at home so his family arranged to adapt their home for wheelchair access downstairs, including a bedroom and en-suite. At quite an early stage Steven was able to spend a lengthy period of rehabilitation at the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital. The case manager coordinated the provision of services to Steven from the Local Authority, care agencies, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The “team” met regularly with Steven at multi disciplinary meetings.

Steven later decided he wanted to relocate and purchase his own home. Thanks to the compensation he received after his accident, he was able purchase a home. He had the property adapted so it now provides suitable accommodation for his needs. He is supported in his home by a round the clock team of carers. Stephen also has space for his family to visit.

Steven’s Spinal Cord Injury Settlement

The Defendants admitted liability for Steven’s accident at an early stage. This helped us obtain interim payments of £1,080,000 for him and he received these while the case was going on.  The Local Authority met most of the care payments whilst the case was going on but Steven wished to purchase his own care. We then achieved a settlement following a round table meeting. At this time, Steven accepted the sum of £3.2 million by way of lump sum together with periodical payments of £165,000 per year for life. These periodic payments will cover his care and case management costs. Given Steven’s anticipated life expectancy this would equate to about £7.75 million.

We are delighted that we could help Steven get his settlement for his spinal injury. If you would like to find out more about the work of our Personal Injury solicitors, please get in touch.
