Injuries Suffered After Drinking Fake Alcohol
A 23 year old British backpacker died after consuming poisonous alcohol sold as Gin in Indonesia. This has raised the awareness of the dangers of fake alcoholic drinks which often contain very high levels of poisonous methanol and other toxic ingredients.
Do not be fooled into thinking that you will only face such dangers when you are on holiday in exotic locations. There are high streets shops in England selling fake alcohol, as our client discovered.
One of our solicitors, David Tomlinson, is currently representing Sharon. She bought a bottle of Vodka from an off-licence in the Broad Marsh Shopping Centre in Nottingham. This Vodka turned out to be fake.
Sharon drank some of the Vodka and she was taken violently ill. Trading Standards carried out tests on similar bottles of Vodka seized from the same off-licence. They showed that the Vodka had over 27 times the permitted maximum concentration of Methanol. Sharon now has significant medical problems, including continuing intense headaches and problems with her eyesight. Sadly Sharon has not been able to return to work.
The proprietor of the off-licence was convicted and his licence was removed. His insurers have agreed to compensate Sharon but we cannot finish her claim until experts can give a more accurate indication of her long-term future. In the meantime, Sharon is trying to raise public awareness of the dangers posed by drinking fake alcohol.
